The Republican Party has its roots in Jackson, Michigan. Outraged over the passage of the Nebraska Act (which opened new territories to slavery), well over one thousand citizens met “under the oaks” on July 6, 1854 to denounce slavery, develop a platform and adopt the Republican party name.

Though the issues have changed in size and complexity, the opportunity to overcome injustice still exists for the citizens of Jackson County. The Grand Old Party has always stood for personal freedom and continues to be the rational voice of our nation’s hard working Americans.

The Jackson County Republican party is a stead-fast defender of individual initiatives, and believes strongly in a system of democracy and a market system that is free. Furthermore, we take to heart what our first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, said: “The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all in their separate and individual capacities.”
